Murray
Leinster
1896 - 1975
William Fitzgerald Jenkins
Leinster served
his country in both World Wars and wrote westerns and mysteries (including
screenplays). But all else pales compared to his amazing 50+ year career
as a science fiction author. Justly known as "the dean of science fiction",
his works reflect every major period in the development of SF.
Leinster's SF
tale "The Runaway Skyscraper" appeared in 1919, years before Hugo Gernsback
invented the "scientifiction" genre. From 1926 to 1937--the days of early
magazine science fiction before the "Golden Age"--Leinster continued to produce
innovative stories. "Sidewise in Time" (1934), for example, was the first
true parallel worlds tale. After John W. Campbell, Jr. became editor of Astounding
in 1937 and raised science fiction to new literary and scientific heights,
Leinster was one of the few early authors who adapted successfully to the
new environment, with now-famous stories like "First Contact" (1945) and
the 1956 Hugo award winner "Exploration Team". After the Golden Age, Leinster
went on writing SF almost until his death.

The Forgotten Planet
Beneath dense gray clouds through which no sun shone lay
a forgotten planet. It was a nightmare world of grotesque and terrifying
animal-plant life. Gigantic beetles, spiders, bugs and ants filled the putrid,
musty earth -- ready to kill and devour anything in sight.
There were men amidst this horror -- men who cringed and ran from the
ravening monsters and huddled in the mushroom forests at night.
Burl was one of these creatures. But one day inspiration hit Burl. He
would find a weapon -- he would fight back.

Space Platform
Reach for the Stars: We now accept space travel as a reality,
but what of a city in space, built on an ever suspended platform? Joe Kenmore
thought his job was going to be a small one on this project: just installing
gyroscopes. He hadn't counted on beautiful women, a superhumanly powerful
Indian and a midget whose mind functioned like an electronic brain..
Space Tug
30 MINUTES TO LIVE! Joe Kenmore heard the airlock close
with a sickening wheeze and then a clank. In desperation he turned toward
Haney. "My God, we've been locked out!" Through the transparent domes of
their space helmets, Joe could see a look of horror and disbelief pass across
Haney's face. But it was true! Joe and his crew were locked out of the Space
Platform. Four thousand miles below circled the Earth. Under Joe's feet rested
the solid steel hull of his home in outer space. But without tools there
was no hope of getting back inside. Joe looked at his oxygen meter. It registered
thirty minutes to live.
City on the Moon
Life on the moon under anything less than optimal conditions
had always been a nightmare, and as Joe Kenmore and his colleague, Moreau,
drove back to the City On The Moon on that day the Earth shuttle was due
to land, the nearby mountain supporting critical elements of the shuttle’s
landing mechanisms crumbled causing an avalanche and resulting in chaos.
Optimal conditions were no where in sight that day and as Kenmore and Moreau’s
investigations lead to their conclusion that explosions had been responsible
for the avalanche. Now they realized that they were in a race against the
clock to restore the landing beam before the shuttle had reached it’s point
of no return prior to landing. Kenmore had more than strictly humanitarian
reasons for wanting to prevent a mishap aboard the shuttle that day, because
on this particular mission, Arlene Gray was aboard. Kenmore had been anxiously
awaiting her arrival, and while in the scope of things Kenmore’s comparatively
meaningless love life might hang in the balance . . .

Gateway to Elsewhere
Suppose that in another dimension, the world of the Arabian
Nights is real, including very powerful and very dangerous djinns, who
are nothing like Aladdin's big blue pal. A man from our world wouldn't
have a chance against them ... or, would he?
Operation: Outer Space

The Other Side of Here
Onslaught from the Fouth Dimension.
War with the Gizmos

Pirates of Ersatz/The
Pirates of Zan
Because Bron Hoddan was a serious electronics engineer,
he didn't want any part of his particular planetary heritage. For he was
from Zan - and Zan's only occupation was space-ship piracy!. So Bron went
to Walden, the most civilized planet of them all. His first step to making
himself a good reputation was to invent a machine that would save the government
millions. But when instead he was seized and jailed as the most unspeakable
criminal in Walden's history, he realized that there was only one way open
to remedy this "civilized" disaster. And that was by putting into use some
of Zan's old-fashioned buccaneering techniques!
Four From Planet 5
The strange visitors had landed. Why had they come, and
what unknown terror would they bring upon our world? These children from
another time, another planet, were able to read human minds. They were utterly
invincible.
The Monster From Earth's End
The first sign of anything wrong at
the outpost was the plane. It crazily circled the little island, its
cargo-bay doors open, its radio dead. It seemd to hang in the air for
a moment and then it dived downward, levelled and dipped again. It made a
belly landing on the stone runway with its wheels still retracted. There
was a singular, dead silence and then a shot rang out. The crew of
two and the seven passengers had vanished, the cargo was strewn about, and
the fuel tanks had been emptied. And the pilot, after landing, had
blown his brains out.
Men into Space
Starting with the rockets of today, (this story, based on
the popular television series of the same name) moves on to trace the development
of the Space Platform and spaceships. It concludes with the first successful
attempts to land on the Moon.Mars.and points beyond. The entire story is
seen through the eyes of young Ed McCauley, whose adventures in outer space
will excite you with the sheer wonder of man's daring in the Space Age.
The Wailing Asteroid
The first sounds came at midnight in a plaintive scream
from an unknown voice in the vastness of space. Within hours the entire world
heard the eerie throbbing. And in billions of earthbound minds the horror
grew. Hours later, to the ears of a helpless world, the second message came.
. . Earth's days were numbered!
Creatures of the Abyss/The
Listeners
From the ocean depths, terror stalked mankind.
The listeners... Orejas de ellos, the things who listen,
whispered the superstitious fishermen when the strange occurences began
off the Philippine coast. How else explain the sudden disappearance of a
vessel beneath a mysterious curtain of foam? The writings of thousands of
maddened fish trapped in a coffin-like area of the oceean? What monsters
gorged at the bottom of Luzon Deep and what were their plans? Radar expert
Terry Holt and the crew of the Esperance had to devise a weapon against
the horrifying creatues which threatened mankind with extinction.
Operation Terror
Three "Aliens" from outer space land at Boulder Lake Park,
Colorado and begin exploring, armed with a terrifying paralysis ray, and
only one man in Boulder Lake can hope to solve the mystery of the Aliens
who had come to Earth.
Talents, Incorporated
The remorseless agressors had everything in the galaxy on
their side--except the little idiosyncrasies of the human mind!
Pretenders or Prophets? At best, the tiny Kandarian Air
Fleet would fight until its last ship was blown into infinity. At worst,
it would be annihilated without a chance. To young Captain Bors, either option
was unthinkable. The ruthless Dictator of Mekin had already conquered twenty-two
helpless planets. Now he wanted Kandar's unconditional surrender, or his
vastly superior forces would blast it out of existence. It took a lot of
guts, and the hope that is frequently born of despair, for a military man
like Bors to throw in his lot with Talents, Incorporated, an untried, unscientific
organization. Through peculiar gifts of extra-sensory perception, its personnel
could, their leader insisted, out-think and out-guess even the most deadly
dictator in the history of mankind. Could it? It just might. And it just
might not. . . . But there was absolutely nothing to lose, and a free world
(and a beautiful girl) to win. Captain Bors made his decision, and the loaded
die was cast!
The Duplicaters
A planet where everyone has a machine which can duplicate
anything would be the wealthiest world in the galaxy, right? Wrong. And
unless the hapless voyager who’s trapped on the planet can find a solution
to its problem, his voyaging will be over—permanently.
The Greks Bring Gifts
The Greks were people-haters.
They came to Earth in their space ship, bearing fabulous gifts – such
as machines that did any job automatically, and fertilizer that made plants
shoot up overnight. But they presented their gifts with contempt, and with
a look in their eyes that made people feel “creepy.”
Still, because of the brave new world they promised, the Greks could
be forgiven anything – until they left and people discovered that the machines
were breaking down. Then their only choice was to beg the Greks to come back,
on their own terms. And they knew the terms would be hard...
Invaders of Space
A young engineer named
Horn is kidnapped by Captain Larson to drive the "Theban" to the spaceship
"Danae", which was loaded with space credit notes. If Horn wanted to save
the "Danae" from space invaders he had his work cut out for him.
Spaceman/Checkpoint Lambda
As soon as he arrived to take over his command, Scott knew
that something was wrong.
The protagonist of "Checkpoint Lambda", Lt. Scott of the
Space Patrol, is like most of Leinster's heroes: competent and level-headed.
When Scott takes command of the space station Checkpoint Lambda, he finds
that it has been taken over by would-be pirates who are planning to seize
a treasure ship. What the pirates don't know (but Scott does) is that Checkpoint
Lambda is in the path of several comets, which are due to hit the station
in a few hours. Scott has to outsmart the pirates, save the station, and
rescue a girl that the pirates are holding captive.
The Other Side of Nowhere
The spaceship Rim Star
was on a routine mission when a merchant-space officer discovered that
something was all wrong about the Rim Star. The ship was in deadly danger
and to save it he must bring it to the place of nightmare...the Other Side
Of Nowhere.
Space Captain
Interstellar chase of a space buccaneer.
Miners in the Sky
In the dust-clouded asteroid rings of a gas giant of Thothmes,
the space miners, like the gold prospectors of past centuries, ply their
lonely quest hoping to strike it rich. The asteroid occasionally hide the
nuggets of the Abyssal Crystal—the most valuable material in space, one that
allows the spaceship engine to function.
Between murder and accidents in this lawless space, the mortality rate
among the miners is 30% per year, and the miners are a tough, expedient
bunch. However, even a veteran like Dunne is unprepared for space pirates,
or the rumors of mysterious aliens. Just when the things couldn't get any
tougher, however, his partner's sister comes to the Rings of Thothmes...
